CHS to the rescue!

In December of 2015, Detroit Animal Control (the government run shelter tasked primarily with getting stray dogs off the streets of Detroit) hired a new Director, Melissa Miller. The past Director had been accused of mismanagement and neglect, and unfortunately, the DAC had been known for having a very high-kill rate and unsanitary conditions.

Director Miller is determined to make improvements to the DAC. She is getting help from volunteers, changing the cleaning protocols, dealing with space issues, and even looking toward conducting public adoptions sometime in the future.

CHS supports the direction Director Miller is taking the DAC. In order to help her and the over-capacity shelter, we agreed to rescue and rehabilitate some of their dogs in early January. We transferred 11 dogs into our care the first day, and have since accepted another 5.

We are proud to be one of the first organizations to help. These are 16 lives saved that would not have been otherwise. We hope other rescues and shelters will follow our lead so the DAC can do what is right for the dogs of Detroit.

We will continue to support Director Miller as we can, while keeping Jackson County animals our priority.

The dogs we received from the DAC are very loving and extremely adoptable, but a bit scared by all the changes! They are currently enjoying being pampered by our staff and volunteers. Each one needs medical care and spaying or neutering. If you would like to help care for these dogs or any of our animals, please donate by clicking here!

These great dogs will be available soon, please keep checking the adoptable animals on our website and facebook posts!
