Four Beautiful Puppies Adopted into the Same Extended Family

Cascades Humane Society, on average, has a litter of puppies available to adopt every 4-to-6 weeks or so. This past end of September – beginning October, was especially busy because we had two large litters of puppies come in, and hey, who doesn’t love puppies? When this happens our adoption desk gets extremely busy showing puppies all day. When we have puppies available for adoption they usually get adopted within a few days — often all the pups are adopted on the first day. It’s a tough job, but somebody has to do it!

It’s early October. Into this happy mayhem walks Casandra and Sheila, two bubbly sisters-in-law that are also obviously good friends. CHS is featuring a litter of unusually handsome puppies they want to see that look like Boxer mixes, but then there’s those wrinkles on the forehead …hmmm? We can only guess what these pups might be mixed with. At any rate these pups are going to be big and very handsome dogs.

It doesn’t take long for the Casandra and Sheila to fall in love. They both already have two dogs each at home. Cassandra has two small dogs, little Mabel, a Maltipoo, and a tiny Chihuahua Yorkie named Blue. Sheila has two big dogs at home — Molly, a Yellow Lab, and Homer, a Malamute/Husky mix. They each decide to adopt a puppy. They both place a hold on one puppy for each of them. Casandra placed her hold on puppy Gracie and Sheila put her hold on puppy Diamond. The hold reserves the puppies for them for one day. They plan on completing the adoption the following day, but they will have to bring their own dogs into CHS first to make sure their dogs will get along with the new puppies.

A few hours went by and Casandra and Sheila came back to CHS to visit with more of the puppies. They decided to place a hold on two more puppies: one more for Sheila, and a second pup for Casandra. The additional holds were placed on puppies Crystal and Ruby. If all four puppies were adopted, then they would all grow up together, seeing each other weekly in this extended family situation. How cool is that?

The holds placed on the puppies were for 24 hours. Casandra and Sheila were too excited to wait that long. Later that same day they brought all four of their present dogs back to CHS to meet the puppies. The meeting with the family’s current dogs went really well and both Sheila and Casandra adopted two puppies each. All four puppies were female.

Sheila adopted Diamond and Crystal. They were renamed, Annie and Georgie. Cassandra adopted Gracie and Ruby. They were renamed Sky and Emma. The name Sky was chosen by Casandra’s and Peter’s 2-year-old daughter whose name is Wynter Rose – way to go Wynter! Great dog name! All of the puppies get to visit with each other every Sunday. Everyone in the family noted that all the puppies were adjusting well and seemed to be super smart.

When the dogs all get together Molly, the older Lab is really patient with the puppies, but she also lets them know when she’s had enough. The puppies have four great dog teachers in the family, along with their humans, helping them learn how to be dogs as they grow up. Seeing these pups just 3 weeks after they were adopted was amazing. They had just about doubled in size. The puppy originally named Gracie, the runt, who now was named Sky, was no longer the runt. Sky had caught up in size to her sisters.

We are thankful to our many exceptional foster families who make it possible for CHS to take in some pregnant cats and dogs and care for them through the birth and weaning process. CHS provides our foster homes with everything they need to house and care for their fosters. However, It’s still a long and demanding process for our foster volunteers. Our foster families are a vital part of what we do here at CHS and we are so grateful to them.
