EVENTS AT CASCADES HUMANE SOCIETY

Event Information:

  • Nala's Story

Brian Lauer, part of the family owned Lauer Funeral Homes happened to see a picture in the newspaper in September of 2011 of a beautiful St. Bernard named Nala. Nala was available for adoption at Cascades Humane Society. He immediately called about Nala and within a day learned Nala was available!

When Nala arrived at CHS, she tested positive for heart worm. Brian didn’t give up on Nala and agreed to foster her under the CHS supported treatment. Nala responded well to the treatment and was finally medically approved for adoption. As Brian began to bond with Nala, he tried to determine if she had any “issues” after going through the surrender and heart worm treatment. What he found was that Nala was very laid back and a very sweet dog that loved people and loved to be pet. One day Brian wondered if Nala would like to come to work with him and meet the people coming into the funeral home, so he brought Nala to work. Well, Nala now attends work on most days. Currently Nala works “the front,” greeting people as they enter and occasionally will be requested to join family and friends in some of the rooms.

Nala provides comfort to both young and old alike, putting up with the small children as they pet, hug and play with her and sitting quietly as people grieve and pet her for the comfort she provides. People now come in expecting to see her and look for her if they return to complete their arrangements. Brian has received so much feedback about Nala and how she has comforted them he has taken her to a couple of classes for therapy dog training and hopes to complete that program in the future. For now, Nala goes pretty much everywhere with him and he is still amazed that he found his “best friend” at CHS!
